“holding fast to the word of Life”

I wonder what the result would be if we all kept a chart for one week and put down on paper the amount of time which we spent in reading God’s word and things which help us to understand it, and the time we spent reading newspapers and novels or watching films?  –Martin Lloyd Jones

Live the Story by…”holding fast to the word of Life”…

Phillipans 2:[12] Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, [13] for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
[14] Do all things without grumbling or questioning, [15] that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, [16] holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. [17] Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. [18] Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me.

The Great Neglect

Reflecting, contemplating, Confessing and deciding to move after reading these thoughts from Martin Luther today,

“The neglect of Scripture, even by spiritual leaders, is one of the greatest evils in the world. Everything else, arts or literature, is pursued and practiced day and night, and there is no end of labor and effort; but Holy Scripture is neglected as though there were no need of it. Those who condescend to read it want to absorb everything at once. There has never been an art or a book on earth that everyone has so quickly mastered as the Holy Scriptures. But its words are not, as some think, mere literature (Lesewort); they are words of life (Lebewort), intended not for speculation and fancy but for life and action. By why complain? No one pays any attention to our lament. May Christ our Lord help us by His Spirit to love and honor His holy Word with all our heart. Amen.” (LW 14:46)

The Class of 2014

Enjoy cultural insight from Beloit’s Keefer Professor of the Humanities Tom McBride and pastors.com on How quickly will your favorite illustrations become out-dated?

Most of the U.S. college class of 2014 can’t write in cursive, rarely use snail mail, and first heard the name Michelangelo because it was a computer virus.

This, according to the Beloit College Mindset List, released this week. The list provides a look at the cultural touchstones that shape the lives of students entering college this fall. The list was originally created to remind faculty to be aware of dated references in their teaching, but the list is also a reminder to those of us in ministry of how quickly some of our favorite illustrations and cultural references dissipate before each new generation.

It is also a reminder that each new generation must hear the gospel fresh and new: “Eventually that entire generation died and was buried. Then another generation grew up that didn’t know anything of God or the work he had done for Israel.” (Judges 2:10 MSG)

Most students entering college for the first time this fall—the Class of 2014—were born in 1992, and this is a glimpse into their mindset:

1. Few in the class know how to write in cursive.

2. Email is just too slow, and they seldom if ever use snail mail.

3. “Go West, Young College Grad” has always implied “and don’t stop until you get to Asia…and learn Chinese along the way.”

8. With increasing numbers of ramps, Braille signs, and handicapped parking spaces, the world has always been trying harder to accommodate people with disabilities.

9. Had it remained operational, the villainous computer HAL could be their college classmate this fall, but they have a better chance of running into Miley Cyrus’s folks on Parents’ Weekend.

10. A quarter of the class has at least one immigrant parent, and the immigration debate is not a big priority…unless it involves “real” aliens from another planet.

11. John McEnroe has never played professional tennis.

12. Clint Eastwood is better known as a sensitive director than as Dirty Harry.

13. Parents and teachers feared that Beavis and Butt-head might be the voice of a lost generation.

14. Doctor Kevorkian has never been licensed to practice medicine.

But when do we invite someone to church?

Last week while seating in a room filled with men of the cloth, chatting about Living the Story in our culture, someone asked the question, “But when do we invite someone to church?”

I loved the statement/answer/wisdom from friend & floridian, Jason Dukes,

“Well, in our culture that is not a very enticing or compelling invitation.  But what is a compelling invitation is to invite people to live beyond self-purpose. People are passionate about a cause. Connect the cause in their heart to the creator of their heart.

“LIve Sent,” Think on that thought while checking out this video…

What has this Student Camp thing been all about?

This is a recurring question from those who have real jobs and do not spend the summer at student camp.

Here you go…. a quick visual of a week at a camp in Ridgecrest, North Carolina where I had the opportunity to share the story of God with students.
Thanks to the James Tealy Band for the footage and leading the camp to worship the One True God.

A Taste of Summer

Engaging a new Culture

We do live life in a changing world.  It seems in just a few short decades, society has rearranged itself-its worldview; its basic values; its social and political structures; its arts; and it’s key institutions.

People are now processing truth in new and different ways.

Michael Carpenter a good friend and truly a cultural architect speaks to these changes and how they need to change us. His words and life continue to drive me to a rearrangement of life for the sake of others. So, dive in to his thoughts and his blog. Thanks to Michael for insight into Living the Story…..

“I just read this article from the Harvard Business Review about the firing of General McChrystal by President Obama.

I, however, discover something in it that while relevant to the topic presented in the article has further implications than for Special Ops dropped into unknown places.

Also, I do not mean to insinuate in any way that the church’s mission strategies should be militaristic.

However, I think we can and should learn from all possible sources since all truth is God’s truth.

With that said, here is an excerpt from the article.

Dropped into an unknown culture, in a land of threatening terrain, with tools insufficient to the mission and dependent on distrustful partners, the team did what it was trained to do — design an entirely new path toward achieving its goal.

The 12-man, multidisciplinary team went through the ritual steps of innovation. The members observed the local culture, collaborated among themselves and with their partners, brainstormed and generated new options, screened for the best, iterated a few, and chose one. In the end, the best option was to get on a horse. The team mounted up to show respect to the culture, establish their social position as warriors, and transport their high-tech GPS systems and laser sighting gear across mountains and desert …

Special Forces soldiers and Special Ops soldiers in general, are taught how to go into unknown, complicated, changing environments, do fast ethnography, brainstorm, generate new ideas, iterate, collaborate, choose the most valid solution for the situation, and execute quickly. They operate in a paradigm of possibility, not reliability, learning by observing and doing, not memorizing standard procedures. They are great Design Thinkers.

What can the church learn about engaging culture from a 12 man special ops team?

1. Design a path to achieve a goal.

2. Steps to innovation:

a. observe the local culture

b. collaboration

c. discover your best options

d. show respect for the local culture

3. Operate in a paradigm of possibility, not reliability.

4. Learn by observing and doing, not memorizing standard procedures.”

Champion God’s work in the lives of those around You

Mac Lake, development pastor at Seacoast Community Church, Leadership lessons have been very beneficial to my walk with God. I continually find myself walking with people who can speak into my life: face to face, through podcasts, through books and online.

As many have stated,  ”Leaders are learners.”

Enjoy and be challenged through the wisdom of Mac Lake.

“Champion God’s work in the lives of those around you.  I put this one first because that’s what Pastor Greg Surratt has done for me.  Time and time again he has expressed his belief and confidence in me.  Before going to Atlanta to interview for this new position, I sat down with him and shared what God had been doing in my heart.   I wanted to seek his blessing and fully disclose what I was thinking.  After I shared my “God story” he said, “I don’t want to see you go, but I always want to champion what God is doing in your life.”  He embraces people with great loyalty, yet holds them loosely.  In my time here I’ve watched numerous young talented pastors move on to go start their own church.  Each time they were championed, celebrated and supported.  It’s sad but sometimes leaders are actually threatened by the work God is doing in the lives of those around them.   I want to be a leader that looks for what God is doing in the lives of others and champion it rather than dampen it.

Check out Mac and begin the follow.
